A visit to the Pecherska Lavra, or Caves Monastry, is a must.  Culture abounds.  For less than $20 you can see the opera, a symphony, a ballet or go to the theatre.  Travel on the underground rail, one of the deepest in the world.  Make sure you visit Arsenalna Metro station.  It is the deepest station, and as you come outside, you will see a canon from the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917.  The canon faces across the street to a building which still bears the scars of machine gun and rifle fire from that Revolution.
